What happens in week 6

A hidden pond in a clearing, fed by small waterfalls. Something old lives at the bottom — you can feel it through your feet. A woman sits on a moss-covered log beside the water, river stones strung at her wrist; she taps her staff against the ground three times before she speaks. Want me to see what's in there? she says, and her eyes never quite settle on the warmth between you.

Around now, your OB or midwife will likely do the first ultrasound.

The goal: confirm a heartbeat. They'll do it transvaginally (a wand, not a belly scan — your uterus is still too low for the regular kind). The first heartbeat you hear feels enormous. Don't be surprised if it doesn't. And don't be surprised if you've been holding yourself back from getting attached — that's not detachment, that's a self-protective reflex that makes sense at this stage. Bonding can come later. It usually does.

✦ Bring your partner if you can. The first heartbeat is a moment you'll want to share.
✦ Drink water beforehand — a slightly full bladder can make the scan easier.
✦ If they can't find a heartbeat at the first scan, it might just mean dates are off — they'll usually rebook for a week or two later before drawing conclusions. If the news is harder, your provider will walk you through what's next; don't make decisions in the parking lot.
