Notes for the road — week 10 in the real world

This is the week of the first real "data" choice.

Around now, you can do NIPT — a blood test that screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome and (usually) tells you the baby's sex. It's optional. Like Fenn's offer to walk with you and name what's coming, the test gives you knowledge you can't unknow. Some couples want every piece of data they can get. Others would rather not know things they can't change. Both are valid.

✦ If you do NIPT, ask your provider to walk you through what each result actually means. False positives happen — a positive screen is not a diagnosis.
✦ If you want the sex revealed at the appointment, say so. If you want it sealed in an envelope for later, say that too.
✦ Miscarriage risk drops sharply this week — to roughly 3%. You can let your shoulders down a little.
