What happens in week 40

The ship anchors off a small island. The Captain rows you ashore — a tropical beach at sunset, palm trees, footprints in the sand leading to a small thatched hut warm with lantern-light. Your partner has to stop twice on the sand, hands braced on knees, breathing through what's already started; the Light between you pulses in time with it now, harder and brighter with every wave that takes them. Then it lifts — out of the two of you, slow, then fast — and hovers ahead, blinding for one long second before it begins to take shape.

Due date — though only about 5% of babies are born on the actual day.

The body is finishing its last work. The mind is exhausted, terrified, joyful, all at once. Most providers will discuss induction at 41 weeks if you haven't gone into labor by then. The arrival is now days, not weeks.

What early labor looks like: contractions that come at regular intervals and get longer, stronger, and closer together over time — not just intensifying for a stretch and easing off. The "5-1-1" rule for first-time labor: contractions every 5 minutes, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour. That's usually time to head in. Water breaking — a gush or a steady leak — is also time to call, even with no contractions yet.

✦ Trust your instincts. If something feels off, call. You've earned that confidence over forty weeks.
✦ Skin-to-skin right after birth helps you and baby — temperature regulation, breastfeeding, bonding. Tell your team you want it (if you do).
✦ The first 24–48 hours are a blur for everyone. Photos help for later — but don't let documenting replace experiencing.
