What happens in week 4

A glade of standing stones in the mist. Faint teal runes glow on their surfaces, cycling slowly. The two of you step inside the circle, and between you, something pulses — answering the stones. We are , your partner says, very quietly. The hand they put on your back is steady; the breath they're holding isn't.

Notes for the road — week 4 in the real world

The test is positive.

Your body just started producing hCG — the hormone every test looks for. Implantation is happening or just happened. What most people don't tell you: it's totally normal to feel shock, joy, and pure terror in the same five minutes . Many people take 3–5 tests just to be sure. That's also normal.

✦ Call your OB or midwife to schedule your first prenatal visit. Most clinics see you around weeks 8–10.
✦ Things to step away from now: alcohol and recreational drugs (no safe amount in pregnancy), smoking, hot tubs and saunas (overheating), and unpasteurized soft cheeses or raw fish (listeria risk is small but real). Deli meats are fine if heated until steaming — the worry is about cold-cut listeria, not the meat itself. When in doubt, check with your provider rather than the internet.
✦ Don't tell anyone yet if you're not ready. Many couples wait until week 12 — there's no wrong answer here.
