What happens in week 28

The road switches back down the cliffs. A terraced settlement clings to the rock face above the sea, and from far below, someone is climbing up to meet you. Your partner stops mid-descent and looks at you: I keep thinking we should be ready, and we're not. The healer reaches you before you've finished the thought.

Your appointments shift to every two weeks. The end-of-pregnancy machinery — RhoGAM if you're Rh-negative, Tdap booster, glucose results — kicks in. The first time someone says "third trimester" out loud, you may feel it in your chest. The whole trimester gets heavier, literally and otherwise.

✦ Get the Tdap shot if you haven't yet. Whooping cough protection passes to baby through the placenta.
✦ Confirm RhoGAM if you're Rh-negative — usually given around 28 weeks.
✦ Check on glucose results. If you haven't heard, ask directly. They've been back for days.
