What happens in week 19

You emerge from the volcanic depths into snow. A small camp of tents and small fires hugs a flat clearing at the base of a cliff face — the climb to come tomorrow. A handful of other travelers are here, resting. The cliff above you is enormous. Everyone is quiet.

Notes for the road — week 19 in the real world

The night before a big appointment is its own thing.

Some people want to read every story about anatomy scans on the internet (don't — see week 3). Some people want to sleep through it. Both are fine. The scan itself takes 30–60 minutes. They'll measure everything, sometimes ask you to walk around if the baby is in a hard position, then bring in a doctor if anything needs a second look.

✦ If they bring a doctor in, don't panic. They do it for borderline measurements all the time, and most things are fine.
✦ Bring a list of questions you've been carrying — this is your chance to ask the most thorough person you'll see in T2.
✦ Whatever they find, the appointment will end and you'll go home. Plan a quiet evening either way.
